When Windows meets a critical error that prevents the operating system from running, the blue screen appears. Faulty hardware, faulty or low-level device drivers, or faulty or low-level software running within the Windows kernel can all cause catastrophic failures.

The most common causes of a checksum problem are  easiest to fix. The CMOS is powered by a watch battery, which can run out of juice at any time. The CMOS can no longer save information when the battery is dead.

Because the computer must spend more time sifting through data fragments and damaged sectors on the drive, disorganized information on your hard drive might degrade performance. The built-in Windows utility Disk Defragmenter can easily (but not quickly; defragging can take hours) solve this problem.
